Since the last update there has been quite a few changes and ideas for the server. They will be explained in detail in this blog post.
Discontinuation of the survival server
Since its beginning the survival server has not attracted many players except a few person I know well. To make this simpler and more enjoyable I decided to close the public access to the survival server and keep it private (whitelisted).
Self hosted server
Since june, you might have seen that the server is down. I decided to host the server myself on a small CasaOS server I have. This is because I had very little time to spend on the server this last semester and paying a hosting service only for a few hours of play-time was not worth it. I still need to make some hardware changes before letting it run for prolongated periods of time, like wiring the ethernet properly and making sure the PSU is reliable. So, for the time being you can expect the server to be occasionaly on, when I feel like playing or when some of you request the server to be on.
Plans for 2.0
1. Changing the terrain
The map has seen many updates and many plugins, it has missing or corrupted chunks, player heads everywhere underground due to an old custom ores plugin and podzol/ice due to an old season plugin. It is also a pain to build infrastructure as biomes are small and not suited for the 1:1 scale we use.
So the idea would be to have a new, more realistic, map in which we would progressively paste in all the builds we made, with careful planning. I think it is best for the future of the server. This change will obviously be time consumming but might save us from endless terraforming in the future. It would also allow for new opportunities, like putting the NPPs further from town for more realism.
2. Adapting the lore
It was always bothering me to have the OG plant in the city, it didn't make sense and the location was therefore not suited for having historical builds. So, I had the idea of making SSX a coastal city like in northern Europe such that the OG plant was used for research for nuclear submarines.
A source of inspiration I have is the city of Brest (France) that has this military harbour with nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers, allowing for nuclear research in the harbour itself for military purposes. And on top, historical fortifications, historical builds and a city that grew from repairing/constructing ships.
This would be a city that is both important for controlling the ocean space and defending the land, with bunkers and fortifications on the coastline. Also being a leader in the nuclear technology, both for military and civil applications.
I will progressively adapt the lore and will allow you to make comments such that it takes a direction that we all agree. The lore will be the basis for the building style and the map.
3. New server name
I'm suggesting to change the name of the server; it's no longer a survival server, it's neither the tenth (X) and I wouldn't call it 'super'. So, I once again suggest we find a better name for the city first, and for the time being, adopt the city name for the server.
Some suggestions are:
- Fort-José
- Arenfell
- Briensk
All this changes and news will soon be uploaded on the Discord server, with votes on the new suggestions.
